Co-State Director Position--Apply Today

Alongside the current HFTN State Director, the Co-State Director will collaboratively lead and support Healthy and Free Tennessee, a statewide coalition working to promote sexual health and reproductive freedom in Tennessee. This co-leadership position will build the base of activists willing to take action on coalition issues, develop community leadership, build relationships with key local, state and national stakeholders, partners, and elected officials, advance engagement strategies, and assist in campaign development and implementation. Both Co-State Directors will report to the Chairperson of the HFTN Steering Committee.

 

HFTN’s Co-Leadership Model
Healthy and Free TN is implementing important internal structure to ensure that the coalition is sustainable and as effective as possible. The coalition is transitioning to a co-leadership/directorship model with the knowledge that it can allow organizations and groups to benefit from diverse identities, styles and strengths, distribute responsibility among leaders and prevent burnout.

Position Duties Include

  1. Coordination of coalition programs, current campaigns and projects including supporting the HFTN Youth Leadership Council

  2. Volunteer/coalition partner engagement through base-building and leadership development

  3. Develop and lead the effective implementation of the coalition’s policy, advocacy and movement building strategies at the state and local levels to advance HFTN’s strategic plan

  4. Management of HFTN annual budget, seeking out and diversifying funding streams, managing current grants

  5. Participating in monthly Steering Committee calls as well as small working group calls and meetings.

  6. Database management of supporters and contacts through NationBuilder platform.

  7. Organization and implementation of HFTN sponsored-events.

  8. Preparing external communications to supporters, community partners and larger audience of potential allies.

  9. Represent HFTN at local and regional events, gatherings and conferences.

  10. Other responsibilities as defined or needed

Preferred experience and attributes include

  • Community organizing experience, especially prior youth organizing experience

  • Membership engagement experience, including event production and organization

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills

  • Experience facilitating productive, enjoyable meetings in person and virtually, including designing and leading creative, participatory workshops

  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse groups, including experience and training in conflict mediation, de-escalation, and facilitating challenging conversations.

  • Experience with creative problem-solving in a collaborative setting

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, and willingness to travel. Prior successful remote working experience a plus.

  • Self motivated, resourceful, creative, and able to work without significant day-to-day supervision, including a demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and prioritize diverse and detailed tasks

  • Collaborative spirit with an ability to maintain flexibility and effectively manage ambiguity in a responsive environment

  • Commitment to abortion access and full reproductive healthcare for all people; commitment to gender and reproductive justice in a broader frame of social, economic, racial justice for all

  • Broad alliance-building experience, including working in collaboration with multiple organizations.

  • A high level of energy, self-confidence, initiative, and follow-through; ability to recognize and act on opportunities

Compensation and Application Process
The Co-State Director is an exempt, full­-time position with a desired start date of January 1, 2017. Salary is based on experience and qualifications.  HFTN also provides a comprehensive benefits package which includes health insurance, vacation and sick time, and support for professional development.
